Building a Compost Turner
In this episode of The Urban Homesteaders, Ben builds a compost turner using 100% salvaged materials. Sorry again for the sound… we still are without real video equipment, so we’re using a macbook as our only video recorder. Stay tuned! We’re building another compost bin this week, and in the next month or so, we’ll be comparing the quality of compost from both!

Like other viewers, I’m a bit put off by your claim of “100% salvaged materials”. This isn’t really relevant to the average viewer. You didn’t teach us how to obtain salvaged materials; you just pointed out how fortunate YOU were to obtain them. Most people don’t know anyone giving away free giant plastic barrels. Our houses did not come with free clamps. We don’t all have vacuums with aluminum poles we’re throwing out. So your video is more ANECDOTAL than INSTRUCTIONAL, unfortunately.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I made one with the same design and posted the results.
damn everybody has nothing but crap to say .on here. great vid ! wish you made more.
Is this supposed to be a comedy? It wouldn’t be nearly so bad if you hadn’t claimed that all of your materials were salvaged… Salvaged from the hardware store perhaps in trade for cash? Or from perhaps from things that you bought beforehand so you could pretend to salvage them later?
@asknomah Maybe it was the vacuum that sucked all the air out of Druidia in Spaceballs.
Cool time machine
i was wondering how come most of the tools you used looked brand new the spirit level still has the label on it but good idea
If you can get more of those barrels. I saw that same type of barrel, but they made a rain catcher out of it. There was a spout on it with a circular cut in the top of the lid and they placed a mesh square over it where the rain could get in there. It was 90.00. So if you can get more, I just wanted to pass this idea along to you. Happy gardening!
When you needed to use the HO, you would of had your wife come in. Seriously dude, tell your wife not to interrupt you while you are talking. Women should not speak when men are speaking. You should slap her around a little so she will learn her place.
*wonders where the pressure treated posts were ‘salvaged’ from* It was a rather long intro – -
@8055boss8055 Lucky!
Your into is 1:07 that’s really long, I’m not even listening to what your saying right now cause I’m like fuck that’s a bunch of shit I don’t care about how to I make this POS?
cheezy
great vid speed it up, more information faster.
or you could have used worms they eat their weight in waste and the more you feed the, the more worms they produce to eat more waste you should also purue your waste this way it compose faster
@ironlionkalo “not trying to be rude…”
You have an odd idea of what not being rude means.
these people are bull shit. i get the feeling they have no idea what they’re doing and might not even be doing it for the right reasons. not trying to be rude, just saying.
id think the cement should be a little more wet than toothpaste, i did masonry for a while but i can see ho you would think that if all you were going by was with grout
Very nice.. Good luck with all that great compost
@NiGHTSx2 Here where I live in Florida you can buy used 55gal vinegar drums for $3 a piece
@EARTHBEAN well he did say that he got the cement from a neighbor so i would have to say that it was good that he used it instead of having all those emissions go to waste by having the neighbor throw it away
@buytheworldacoke pressure treated wood hasnt had arsenic in it for years. I will agree to not put pressure treated wood around your plants. these days they are using copper to treated the wood and it will pull the oxygen out of the soil and stunt the growth of your plants
@TheUrbanHomesteaders if you cant find a black barrel you can paint it black
Fun video. you are right on. Next time securing a post try pea gravel. Amazingly strong and won’t lift out of the ground during a freeze
He used cement to secure the posts; bad man, very bad! Cement production globally is responsible for 15% of ALL manufacturing emissions globally!
